Multiple Cities, Germany / September 2019 / fantasyfilmfest.com
The organizers of Fantasy Filmfest, including programmer Artur Brzozowski, have made a special commitment to exposing their fellow countrymen to genre cinema, screening their program in seven German cities (Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Stuttgart) around the same time. Citing the “amazing lineup,” a panelist notes that “Fantasy Filmfest is all focus on the movies,” with an attention paid to emerging talent: “There’s a special Fresh Blood audience award for best debut feature moviemaker.” Past winners have included Rian Johnson’s Brick, Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild, Gerard Johnstone’s Housebound, and Babak Anvari’s Under the Shadow. The breadth of focus in just those four titles exemplifies the mission statement: “At Fantasy Filmfest, fantasy does not mean dragons, elves, and magical forests, but stands for creativity, innovation, and absurdity.”
