“Backseat Freestyle” by Kendrick Lamarr
Shults: I love Kendrick, he’s one of the greatest rappers of all time, and that’s a song where he’s taking the mind state of an adolescent, and it felt like the right kind of way for Tyler to rebel, and to rebel with the opposite way of how he’s actually feeling. After that track ends, and he’s seeing Alexa in his head, he’s feeling so much regret and melancholy because he loves this girl so much, but to rebel with a group of boys in that sense just felt really right. It’s stuff I’d lived in life.
