“Mitsubishi Sony” by Frank Ocean
Shults: Believe it or not, I never thought about the connection between his songs and his obsession with cars until now: “Mitsubishi Sony” and “White Ferrari.” To me it was about that time in life when you first get a car, that’s your new space. When you’re a kid, it’s your room, and then you get a car and that’s your space. Your parents can’t mess with that. And love is a huge part of this movie, so being in the car with someone you love at that age is the most freeing feeling. That’s why the camera has to spin between them. That’s the highest sense of freedom for me. There’s a beautiful parallel that I never thought of between Frank and his obsession with cars, and what’s happening in this movie in relations to cars at that age.
