The Waves Soundtrack Decoded by Director Trey Edward Shults, Song by Song

“How Great” by Chance The Rapper

Shults: I love Chance the Rapper. I love the dichotomy happening between Kanye’s “I Am a God” and the lyrics in Chance’s track: “How great is our God.” Spirituality is a part of this movie. It happened really organically in the script, but this felt like music Emily would connect with and dig. It also represents the energy shift that I personally, desperately needed after everything that’s come before. We needed to have this beautiful spiritual celebration.
