Number 5: ‘The Invitations’
We go from peak silliness to peak darkness. Seinfeld was a “no hugging, no learning” show, but it wasn’t necessarily a dark comedy. “The Invitations” goes there, though. It takes the apathy, the quasi-nihilism, of Seinfeld and David’s comedic sensibility, and brings it to a logical conclusion.
For all of season seven, George doesn’t want to marry Susan. He’s tried to get out of his engagement, but no luck. The wedding is nigh. Then George catches a break: His cheap wedding invitations contain a toxic adhesive, and Susan dies from licking them.
Everybody is… nonplussed. And even awkwardly relieved? It’s so dark, yet so well done.
