Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974)

Warner Bros.

People who think Martin Scorsese only makes gangster movies really need to check out more of his films — including 1993’s Age of Innocence, his new Oscar magnet Killers of the Flower Moon, and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

The film stars Ellen Burstyn (above) as Alice, a New Mexico wife and mother who pulls up stakes when he husband unexpectedly dies and decides to take their young son to California so she can pursue the dream she abandoned when she married: becoming a singer. Things don’t go as planned, and she ends up a waitress in Tucson, Arizona, where she meets the intriguing David (Kris Kristofferson).

Don’t worry: Scorsese regular Harvey Keitel turns up as well.
