Chinatown (1974)

From the trailer for Chinatown. Paramount.

Roman Polanski’s neo-noir drama stars Jack Nicholson as Jake Gittes, a private eye who gets caught up in the affairs of Mrs. Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway, above). But things get very dark and twisted, and he soon begins unraveling the far more complicated secrets of the powerful secrets of her father, played by John Huston.

The behind the scenes drama was captivating as well, as author Sam Wasson examines in his excellent 2020 book The Big Goodbye: He reveals for the first time that Towne, who won an Oscar for his screenplay, wrote it with the secret help of his friend Edward Taylor.

Wasson also notes that Nicholson was dating Huston’s daughter, Angelica Huston, offscreen at the same time his character was falling for his daughter onscreen.
