Blazing Saddles (1974)

Warner Bros.

The story of Sheriff Bart (Cleavon Little), a Black sheriff trying to bring progress to the Wild West, Blazing Saddles brings a cavalry of jokes that many consider dicey today. But the American Film Institute ranks it as the sixth-funniest movie of all time, and countless fans agree.

One person who doesn’t is Blazing Saddles director and co-writer Mel Brooks — who says it should be number one. He told Vanity Fair in 2016 that AFI messed up by choosing Some Like It Hot as the funniest film.

“I love Some Like It Hot, but we have the funniest movie ever made,” Brooks said.
