ScreenCraft

Relative newcomer ScreenCraft has swiftly established itself. Set up as a consultancy in 2012 by veteran script readers John Rhodes and Cameron Cubbison, it unearths outstanding writing talent via its contests, fellowship, film fund, and annual Writers Summit, which attracts over 500 attendees from all over the world.

It has a wealth of genre categories including sci-fi and fantasy, action and thriller, horror, comedy, drama, and even welcomes budding playwrights and authors of cinematic books or short stories.

Rhodes is proud of ScreenCraft’s celebration of genre.

“You might have written a fantastic horror script but if it’s read by someone who likes highbrow historical dramas it’s not going to get anywhere,” he says.

Winning 2017 fellow, Anna Klassen, signed with WME and was hired by Netflix to write a major film adaptation. Ryan W. Smith won the Fellowship and then co-wrote a film that sold to Netflix for a reported $30 million at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

Rhodes says: “If you shine a light on yourself, it’s less effective than if someone else is shining a light on you. We want to be the ones to shine that light.”

Meeting with Warner Bros. development executive Cate Adams in 2017 prepared ScreenCraft fellowship winners Anna Klassen (L) and Ryan W. Smith (R) to ink major deals with Netflix in the years that followed

DEADLINES: Throughout the year depending on genre
FEES: $39-$79, with an additional fee for professional feedback

PRIZES: $1,000 for each grand prize winner, software prizes and introductions to Hollywood literary managers, agents, studio execs and producers
