BlueCat

Now in its 22nd year, BlueCat is the brainchild of award-winning screenwriter and director Gordy Hoffman (Love Liza, A Coat of Snow).

Accepting feature film, television, and short film screenplays, BlueCat prides itself on its professional script readers providing written analysis to all entrants. Each script may be resubmitted twice.

Notable alumni include 2005 finalist Aaron Guzikowski, who wrote Prisoners, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman, as well as the remake of Papillon, which featured Rami Malek. There’s also 2007 winner Ana Lily Amirpour, who went on to win the Special Jury Prize at the 2016 Venice Film Festival for The Bad Batch. She recently directed critically-acclaimed episodes of Legion and Castle Rock. A 2012 finalist, Ashleigh Powell, is currently writing movies for Disney and Warner Bros.

Hoffman says: “I started BlueCat as a competition I would want to participate in as a writer. Everything BlueCat has developed over the last two decades has been in service of the storyteller.

“Our emphasis is on supporting the writer with feedback we provide as a part of their submission. We look forward to discovering new writers every year.”

Grabbing the grand prize in BlueCat’s 2007 screenplay competition was just the beginning of The Bad Batch writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour’s (R) moviemaking journey
