Scriptapalooza
Founded in 1998, the Scriptapalooza International Screenwriting Competition has become one of the top contests in the field, steering talent toward career opportunities. Its offshoots include a TV writing competition and a fellowship.
All scripts are read by a producer, manager, or agent with a view to optioning or taking it directly to a studio. They include folks from Lawrence Bender Productions, Ghost House Pictures, and Energy Entertainment.
It pushes winners and semifinalists for a year and gets them in front of producers, managers, and agents.
The stats stack up: 35 writers have sold or optioned their script, 69 have films in production or release, and 131 have been hired to write for film or TV.
Runner-up in 2016 Ryan Herring, turned his script The Olympians into a novel, 2017 finalist Jameel Saleem is now writing for South Park, and 2017 semifinalist Amanda Ashley Miess is producing shows for Warner Bros.
DEADLINES: January to April
FEES: $45-$65
PRIZES: Over $50,000 of cash prizes including $10,000 for the winner. Other prizes include mentorships, subscriptions, memberships and legal help.
