Slamdance
Responsible for bringing auteur-extraordinaire Christopher Nolan to the attention of the world, Slamdance Film Festival is a firecracker. Created by a troupe of renegade moviemakers who weren’t accepted into fellow Utah festival Sundance, it’s gone on to cultivate unique raw talent.
Intent on providing a springboard for emerging writers, its screenplay competition has discovered many superb scribes including Joshua Marston (Maria Full of Grace, Complete Unknown) and Steven Fechter and Nicole Kassell (The Woodsman).
Every entrant receives feedback including a logline, genre suggestion, and a paragraph outlining strengths and weaknesses of the script. More intensive notes are available for an additional fee.
Categories in the screenplay competition are Feature, Horror/Thriller, TV Pilot, and Short. The most recent Grand Prize Winner, Jessica Sinyard, won for her TV pilot The Peak, a psychological thriller about a group of overachievers attempting to climb Mount Everest.
DEADLINES: April to July
FEES: $35-$90 depending on category and length of script
PRIZES: $16,000 in total cash prizes, festival passes, membership to the Writers Guild of America and legal services
