Sundance
Want to see your words come to life on screen? That’s the potentiality of the Sundance Screenwriters Lab and the Screenwriters Intensive, part of the Sundance Film Festival.
Created by Robert Redford in 1981, the former is for first or second-time independent feature writers while the latter is for those who come from underrepresented groups such as women and people of color, LGBTQ and those with disabilities. It nurtures 10 to 12 writers via workshops in either Utah or Los Angeles. They are then eligible for Feature Film Program grants and initiatives including the Directors Lab, the Creative Producing Summit, and Women’s Financing Intensive.
The Feature Film Program was established to take scripts from development to distribution. In 30 years more than 400 films have been made including Benh Zeitlin and Lucy Alibar’s Beasts of the Southern Wild, Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s drama Swiss Army Man.
DEADLINES: April to May
FEE: $40
PRIZES: The Lab pays for travel, accommodation, and meals in Utah. For the Intensive, travel to and accommodations in Los Angeles are not covered, but there’s a small travel stipend to help o set costs.
