Natalie Portman was a Best Actress Oscar winner for the previous year’s daring Black Swan when she first appeared in 2011’s Thor, and it felt at first like she had been added to the cast to class things up — and like she may be yet another example of an acclaimed actress relegated to a thankless girlfriend role. That feeling sunk in a little more deeply when Portman’s Dr. Jane Foster had little interesting to do in Thor: The Dark World, and you got the sense that Portman was over it when she opted not to appear in Thor: Ragnarok.
But her return to the MCU in Avengers: Endgame signaled better things to come, and as you may have seen from the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, the new film finds Portman wielding Mjolnir. (If you don’t know what Mjolnir is but are still reading this list, we kind of love you. What’s your deal?)
