Three-time Oscar nominee Ruffalo excels at playing tortured, sensitive souls, so non-comic-book fans might think he’d be a bad fit for the MCU. But his skill at embodying men in noble pain actually makes him ideal as The Hulk — a heroic creature driven by rage and a lack of self-control. When he first runs into Thor, he seems like a captive animal, looking for love and kindness, which is exactly what he is. Ruffalo is able to convey this even vis-a-vis extensive CGI.
