2. Cate Blanchett (Hela in Thor: Ragnarok
Blanchett shares Bale’s gift for transformation, and it’s a very close call to put her above him on our list, but we decided her two Oscar wins should give her the edge. (She won Best Actress for 2013’s Blue Jasmine, and Supporting Actress for 2004’s The Aviator.) Her Hela nearly walked away with Thor: Ragnarok movie thanks to Blanchett’s magnetism.
Though remarkably skilled at immersing herself in others’ lives, Blanchett sometimes plays repressed or tightly wound characters (Carol, Blue Jasmine) who limit her freedom to go big in her performances. When she does get to blow up — as she does in Elizabeth: The Golden Age — it’s glorious. But it’s especially gleeful when her character seems to be having a lot of fun. Oh, and Mjolnir? It’s that thing she destroys above.
