Palm Springs International ShortFest 2019: 13 Moviemakers On The Joys and Perils of Making Short Films

“Wild Love”

I don’t know if we can call it a challenge but it is something you often have in mind when you work on a short, is the huge amount of time it takes to make it, especially in our case working in CG animation. We were a team of six people and we spent a little less than a year, eight months, creating a short film that will be watched by people in six minutes. That can feel a bit thankless sometimes. Audiences don’t necessarily imagine the amount of work that’s behind when they watch a short film.

But at the same time, it’s a great exercise and a real challenge to make people care about your story when it’s a really short one. They are not invested in the story for long but you still have to make them feel something. In our case, we wished for the impact on the viewer to be strong, we wanted to surprise them a lot, shock them, and make them laugh. And it’s really interesting to try to do that in a short time. —Paul Autric, Quentin Camus, Léa Georges, Maryka Laudet, Zoé Sottiaux, Corentin Yvergniaux, directors
