In two words, the most challenging parts of making “Umbra” were the night and the budget. We did not have much money to make this movie: only about $4000. It was very hard because the whole movie was filmed on the street and at night. Other than that, I wanted the entire film filmed on a Steadicam that moves along with our main actress. With our budget and with this stylistic decision, it seemed like no film was going to be made! But we finally found our way. We decided to make the movie with a small camera and a very small steadicam. We used a Sony Alpha 7s camera and just a few lights. After the shooting, I saw the result of our work was bad in terms of color. But we didn’t give up. So, we spent a whole month trying to correct the colors of the film and in fact, we painted the entire film frame by frame! Considering our budget, I’m satisfied with the result. —Saeed Jafarian, director
