2018 Independent Spirit Awards: Ten Moviemakers Share the Lessons They Learned While Making Their Nominated Films

Jonas Carpignano (Director, A Ciambra)

The trick to working with non-actors playing versions of themselves was not treating all non-actors the same. Everyone had their own abilities and their own things they responded to. It was about treating as a group, but also separating them and then trying to find out who responded to what in different scenes. Luckily with this cast, they are people I’ve known for a really long time. The difference with this film was to manage the expectations of tons of people. We shot this film in their actual houses, literally wrangling people together, keeping people focused when they were at heir house and it never really felt like they were at work was totally a bigger challenge than what we had to face when we did Mediterranea.

  • Do you know of all the organizations that tried to push for a fighter union have there been, and how many still exist? Are they collaborating or competing with each other? Seems like these guys are farther along in the process than all other attempts. As an independent contractor myself, this is kind of interesting. I have no idea what the actual laws around independent contract work are, despite doing this for over 10 years ?
