Justin Chon (Director, Gook)
The biggest lesson that I learned was how things seem different but they are not too different in the actual locations. We shot our film in a lot of the areas were the riots actually took place. I felt some of those neighborhoods have been gentrified and changed, but some haven’t. That was a big eye-opening experience. Also, artistically, one of the biggest influences for this film was La Haine, and that was black-and-white. When you shoot in black-and-white you really focus more on the relationships and the people rather than the flashy colors and color palette.
