2018 Independent Spirit Awards: Ten Moviemakers Share the Lessons They Learned While Making Their Nominated Films

Chloé Zhao (Director, The Rider)

The biggest lesson I learned was to stay calm when amazing things happen on set. Take some time, regroup, and make sure I have a coverage for that amazing moment. That’s one thing I learned for a docu-drama like this. You work with your limitations. You have to be friends with your limitations and then those limitations will help you. With the actors I know how far I can push with every single person because I know them personally so well. The script is written for them, but I leave a 25% room for them to push. It’s never going to go too far from what’s real.

  • Do you know of all the organizations that tried to push for a fighter union have there been, and how many still exist? Are they collaborating or competing with each other? Seems like these guys are farther along in the process than all other attempts. As an independent contractor myself, this is kind of interesting. I have no idea what the actual laws around independent contract work are, despite doing this for over 10 years ?
