2018 Independent Spirit Awards: Ten Moviemakers Share the Lessons They Learned While Making Their Nominated Films

Antonio Méndez Esparza (Director, Life and Nothing More)

I realized how difficult it is to make a film like this and how much you have to push, and even thought independent filmmaking is much about love, passion, and a desire to create something beautiful, there is something also in the director that’s kind of ugly. That’s why I thought movies like mother! or Phantom Thread were so truthful in different ways, because there is something about the act of creation that’s difficult. Even thought for me making the movie was a beautiful experience, I think I need to become a better person. That’s not to say I put everyone through torture, but sometimes you become a little ungrateful, to an extent, while you are making the movie.

  • Do you know of all the organizations that tried to push for a fighter union have there been, and how many still exist? Are they collaborating or competing with each other? Seems like these guys are farther along in the process than all other attempts. As an independent contractor myself, this is kind of interesting. I have no idea what the actual laws around independent contract work are, despite doing this for over 10 years ?
