In 2000, Kusama directed her first feature film, Girlfight, which starred Michelle Rodriguez as a troubled teen who takes up boxing. It was critically praised but was not a box office success. As a darling of Sundance, Kusama signed on to make Aeon Flux, a big-budget video game adaptation starring Charlize Theron as its titular strong female presence. Unfortunately, the film was taken out of her hands and restructured so that the finished project does not represent her vision. Her next studio film, Jennifer’s Body also examined a kick-ass heroine and it was a moderate success, making roughly double its budget.
