What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned?
I’ve learned when I take time off of a project, it’s very hard to get back in to it. Another lesson I’ve learned, which may sound trite and hackney, is that writing truly is rewriting.
What’s the hardest scene or project you’ve ever had to write?
Writing action is challenging. I usually try to paint the character into a corner and then see if there is a way to get them out of an impossible situation.
Who’s your favorite screenwriter?
Frank Pierson, Waldo Salt, Robert Towne and Paddy Chayefsky are some pretty good role models.
Do you have a favorite or memorable experience at Austin Film Festival?
It was pouring, I mean cats and dogs. We went to the theater the morning of the screening of my film Baby Baby Baby only to find a small lake filling the theater. I was in a panic but somehow by the time the movie started, the theater was clean and the movie went off without a hitch. It all just fell kind of magical.
