Who: Composer and moviemaker born in St. Petersburg; has scored, amongst others, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street. Recently wrote and directed debut feature It Had to Be You (2015)
What are you working on right now?
I’m working on a couple of different scripts. Both comedies with a female protagonist.
How did you break in or get your start in screenwriting?
I don’t know that I can say I’ve “broken in” per se, but I studied film at NYU and got the opportunity to make my first feature due to a very generous grant from an NYU alum, Chris Columbus.
What is your favorite film or television show? Who is your favorite screenwriter?
My favorite writer would have to be Woody Allen and my favorite movies are Nights of Cabiria, Hannah and her Sisters and Love and Death.
What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned as a writer?
Just because something doesn’t turn out exactly as I pictured doesn’t mean it’s worse. Sometimes it’s just a lateral move, sometimes it is worse, and sometimes it can be better.
