Lost Girls (Netflix)
It’s awesome to see excellent working actors finally get the opportunity to play the lead, and even more awesome to watch them absolutely nail it. Amy Ryan, who you probably know from her roles in The Office and as a supportive wife without enough lines in a litany of movies, steps up in this true story about a Long Island mom who goes searching for her missing daughter and uncovers a terrible serial killer who murders sex workers.
There’s something formulaic about the movie, even if it’s based on a true story, and it went through a few permutations to get here, with Sarah Paulson initially attached to star in a movie that was due to be released by Amazon. Still, with the world so upside down, it’s satisfying to see some justice get served, even if it happened years ago and it’s being played out by Hollywood actors.
