Simon Pegg, once a ubiquitous god to nerds and comedy fans alike, has pulled back on his public persona since revealing his struggle with addiction several years ago. He still makes the occasional blockbuster, including his roles in new Star Trek and Mission: Impossible flicks, but he’s also pushed further into indie films, trying to expand his repertoire and range.
In Lost Transmissions, you can feel him summoning an adulthood of struggle as he plays a record producer who has gone off his schizophrenia medication and deals with the mental repercussions. Juno Temple, daughter of famed punk rock filmmaker Julian Temple, plays the singer-songwriter who tries to bring him back from the edge while seeing what it’s like on the other side.
