It took Richard Stanley nearly three decades to make another movie after the colossal disaster that was The Island of Dr. Moreau, and we are pleased to report that in the 27 years since he got fired off that bizarre disaster, the Hardware filmmaker has retained his flair for the colorful and apocalyptic. He couldn’t work with Marlon Brando on this one, so he got the next best option: Nicolas Cage.
The Oscar-winner, deep into the “working with auteurs and making weird shit” phase of his career, plays it relatively subdued in this Lovecraft adaptation, at least until the end, when everything spins out and the world begins to melt. Tommy Chong also stars in this movie, as a hippie squatting on Cage’s land and waiting for the world to end. He should be credited as playing himself.
