Voice actor Mike Henry announced he will be stepping down as the Black main character and as the Latina maid Consuela. He tweeted that’s it’s “been an honor” to play Cleveland for 20 years, but that “persons of color should play characters of color.” Wendell Pierce is reportedly lobbying for this role.

Jenny Slate accepted the role of Missy because she related to her Jewish heritage, and that fact that she has a white mother. However, Slate quit the show, saying her reasoning was flawed because Missy is of mixed race. “Black characters,” she said, “should be played by Black people.”
