From a production standpoint, we were a small indie crew, so we all wore many hats. This meant that while Vivian and I were in the creative zone, we also had to be thinking like producers, and constantly figuring out how to tackle the rest of the shooting day, and the next day, and the days after that, while trying to be “in the moment” and focused on what was in front of us. It was a fascinating experiment in trying to divide up the brain to be both extremely efficient and organized on the one hand, but still loose and spontaneous on the other. Our process mirrored the structure and tone of the film, which was my goal as a director from the beginning. The aim was to reflect the idiosyncratic nature of being an artist—the unpredictability, the range of emotions, the ups and downs.
