MovieMaker recommends: Wake in Fright (1971)
It’s truly difficult to accurately convey the menace that lurks in every frame of this Australian film, which was digitally restored and re-released in 2004. It follows a well-meaning school teacher’s attempt to return home from an untamed landscape. Australian music legend and screenwriter Nick Cave—whose script for The Proposition was undoubtedly influenced by Wake in Fright—described the film as “the best and most terrifying film about Australia in existence.”
