2018 Beyond Fest Preview: Five Screenings to Catch at Los Angeles’ Expertly Programmed Genre Festival

Dragged Across Concrete

The new film from Craig S Zahler, whose Bone Tomahawk (2015) and Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017) also screened at the festival, is a crime-thriller slow burn of epic proportions, inspired by the likes of Paul Schrader and Sam Peckinpah. Much like the harsh and difficult works of Schrader and Peckinpah, Dragged Across Concrete will not appeal to all. Rest assured that the film’s title, much like his previous film’s titles, can be taken literally, and as a promise of what the film will contain. Zahler specializes in low-budget ultraviolence, of the kind that has defined B-grade grindhouse cinema for ages. His films, however, are paced and written like no other, taking their time to set all the pieces in place before knocking them down in one fell swoop with a burst of bone-crunching mayhem. At 158 minutes, Dragged Across Concrete looks to be Zahler’s most fully realized work to date.

This West Coast premiere on Beyond Fest’s Closing Night will also feature a Q&A session with director S. Craig Zahler, producer Dallas Sonnier and actors Vince Vaughn, Tory Kittles, and Michael Jai White.
