The Last House on the Left (1972)

A relentlessly upsetting, troubling realistic story of abduction and many horrors that follow, Wes Craven’s debut film inspired a series of similarly graphic 1970s horror movies and exploitation flicks, few of them as nastily powerful as this one.

It is inspired, interestingly, by The Virgin Spring, made by one of the world’s most respected filmmakers, Ingrid Bergman, in 1960.
