This Netflix docudrama series is primarily about Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt — but it’s also about ancient Rome, which had very close ties with Egypt. Cleopatra had a romantic relationship with Roman ruler Julius Caesar, and together they had a child, Caesarion. After Caesar was murdered by Roman senators in 44 B.C., she continued her partnership with the Romans by marrying Roman general Mark Antony in 32 B.C. They had three children together, but their story ended in tragedy when they were defeated and their powers seized by Octavian, who would go on to become the Roman Emperor Augustus.
