What Is Real in Painkiller and Made Up

Other Composite Characters

Edie Flowers isn’t the only composite character in the series. There are many others, like Taylor Kitsch’s Glen Kryger, an auto mechanic and father who ultimately dies of an overdose after getting hooked on prescription Oxycontin his doctor gave him for a back injury he got at work. Glen Kryger represents thousands of working-class Americans who fell victim to Oxycontin after their doctor prescribed it for pain after surgery or other injuries.

There’s also West Duchovny’s Shannon Schaffer character, who isn’t a real person, but does represent the many attractive salespeople who were recruited by Purdue as drug reps to convince doctors to prescribe Oxycontin.
