Fast-forwarding a little farther into the future, this one is set in the 1950s. Carol follows a forbidden love affair between Therese (Rooney Mara), an aspiring photographer and an older woman going through a contentious divorce (that’s Carol, played by Cate Blanchett).

But when Carol’s ex-husband threatens to use her sexuality against her to gain custody of their daughter, Carol must make a difficult choice.
