A tonal, if not thematic, follow-up to his Oscar-nominated Dogtooth, Yorgos Lanthimos’ ALPS forced a small American audience this summer to investigate their relationship with mourning. Is this movie a satire, or is it a sincere attempt to explore the grieving process? Either way, ALPS is a shining example of how a brilliantly-executed, high-concept script can innovate on a miniscule budget. It’s a travesty that after the controversy Dogtooth stirred up, this picture slipped through the cracks. (Streaming on Netflix)
