In a sense, Rust and Bone is my least favorite of Mr. Audiard’s three most recent films (The Beat that My Heart Skipped and A Prophet were both more cohesive films). But it is also the boldest and most unforgettable film he’s ever made. Anyone with the guts to cut Marion Cotillard’s legs off and then direct her in a sex scene deserves raucous applause. Rust and Bone attempts to redefine our relationship to beauty, and it goes a long way toward succeeding.
