5) Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011), dir. David Gelb

Gelb’s documentary about Jiro Ono, the 85-year-old chef whose 10-seat restaurant in a Tokyo subway station is the only sushi bar ever to earn three Michelin stars, is, hands down, the year’s most instructive, inspiring documentary. Jiro, who started his apprenticeship at the age of nine, has spent 75 years refining his craft, and he still doesn’t think he knows anything. So, if you’re looking for a man to model your work ethic after, look to Jiro. Not only is he still a student or his art at 85, he also enjoys the hell out of what he’s doing. (Streaming on Netflix)
