The Color Purple (2023)

This modern remake of the mid-2000s stage musical, which itself is based on the beloved 1982 book by Alice Walker, stars Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, Coleman Domingo, and Taraji P. Henson. It’s the second movie version of the book following the 1985 movie starring Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg.

Directed by Blitz Bazawule, It tells the classic, heartbreaking, yet inspiring story of Celie, a Black woman in the American South between 1909 and 1947. Alongside the women in her life, Celie goes on a journey of healing through writing letters to God detailing harrowing stories of abuse at the hands of various men in her life.

It’s ultimately an inspiring story full of wonderful songs.
