Richard Jewell
When Clint Eastwood’s Sully presented pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger as a victim of a news media and government run amok, it wasn’t totally persuasive, because so many of us just remember Sully as a pure hero. But with the life of Richard Jewell, Eastwood has found the perfect vehicle for his campaign against rushing to judgment. Paul Walter Hauser plays the law-enforcement obsessed security guard as sometimes hapless and sometimes brave, but always endearing, and Eastwood skillfully fuels our fury as Jewell is railroaded into being named the chief suspect in a bombing he tried to prevent. Sam Rockwell gets all the best lines as Jewell’s wily lawyer, Watson Bryant. The AFI Fest audience recognized they were in the presence of a master as Eastwood took to the podium to introduce his film and his cast, which also includes Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm and Olivia Wilde: The director was greeted with a warm standing ovation. At 89, Eastwood has topped himself, yet again.—Tim Molloy
