To the Ends of the Earth

Known more in the U.S. for his horror movies like Pulse, Japanese moviemaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s latest, To the Ends of the Earth, follows Yoko, a news reporter on assignment in Uzbekistan. Yoko spends much of her time running errands in this foreign land—simple errands that seem to take hours longer than they should, due to her propensity for getting hopelessly lost.

Yoko maintains an unwavering professionalism and exuberance on screen when filming her travel segments for the Japanese audience back home, but when the cameras shut off, she returns to a more melancholic state. She secretly wants to quit her TV career and become a singer. (In real life, actor Atsuko Maeda is a former J-Pop superstar).

To the Ends of the Earth presents a deeply empathetic portrait of a complicated lead character. —Caleb Hammond
