Continuing with her intimate portraits of youth in transition, Chilean director Dominga Sotomayor delivers another delicately striking story with her Locarno-winning third feature. Using an evocative color palette that exudes nostalgia, a curated soundtrack, and an effervescent tone, Too Late to Die Young tells the story of Sofia (Demian Hernández), a teenager coming of age in the ’90s outside of traditional society. Living in the countryside with a group of families hoping to leave behind consumerism and the unnecessary burdens of modernity, the young woman’s peculiar adolescent experience is at once relatable and enthralling.
