After dedicating his teenage years to building his muscles and becoming a fitness fanatic, he served for a brief time in the military. Then, he entered a junior bodybuilding competition, placed first, and got invited to be a trainer at a gym in Munich in 1966. He ended up living at the gym with very few possessions.
“There was a tiny little room and the bed was maybe as big as the bed I grew up with. All I had was a mixer that helped me mix my protein drinks and a few clothes. That was it, and I stayed there for at least a year. So at any given time, I can go out and work out. I mean, how lucky of a son of a [expletive] am I to have the gym be my home?” he says.
