The Note

The strangest and most confusing piece of evidence — actually, one of the only physical pieces of evidence in the whole case — is the note that Margie and Ron Pandos say they found at the foot of Jennifer’s bed on the morning of February 10, 1987. The note is written in a strangely sloppy scrawl, perhaps in someone’s non-dominant hand so as to disguise their handwriting.

It was addressed to “Mr. and Mrs. Pandos” and was written as if it was dictated by Jennifer to the writer, who was described as a “father figure.”

The note insists that Jennifer is fine and that she plans to come home in a few days. It instructs Margie and Ron to go to work as normal and to transfer money into her bank account. It also threatens that if they call the police, Jennifer will never come home. But perhaps the most bizarre and trivial detail of the note is the instruction to cancel Jennifer’s doctors appointment for that week.

“Your daughter’s with me. She’s fine,” the note read, according to a 2019 article from NBC News. “She’s having some problems and needs time away.”

”Do not call the police,” the note added. “I can easily find out if you do. I may never come back home. Don’t tell my friends about this. Just tell them that I’m sick.”

Nothing was missing from Jennifer’s undisturbed bedroom except for her purse. She had not taken any bags or clothes with her, making it unlikely that she had run away.
