Shia LaBeouf

No one’s saying LaBeouf, 37, has led a perfect life. But he is one of our most terrific young actors. LaBeouf grew up poor in Los Angeles with his mother, a visual artist, jewelry designer, and former dancer. (His dad was a former rodeo clown.) Hoping to achieve financial success, he started doing standup comedy at a young age, telling the Los Angeles Times in 2007, “I was a kid with a bowl-cut and suspenders. My shtick at that time was the 50-year-old mouth on the 10-year-old kid.”

He soon got an agent through a spectacular bit of acting: impersonating a 50-year-old British manager, and calling an agent he found in the Yellow Pages. The agent realized he was a kid, but “she had never been approached that way,” LaBeouf told the Times. She watched his standup act and was impressed enough to take him on.
