In 2013, a man calling himself “Kai” who was later identified as Caleb Lawrence McGillvary got famous overnight when a TV interview he gave to a local Fresno, Calif. news station went viral. McGillvary was lauded as a hero for saving a woman at the scene of a car accident by wielding a hatchet on her attacker, hence the nickname “hatchet wielding hitchhiker.” That is, until three months later when he was accused of murder.
