The Hunger Games (weekend gross $33.5 million, total gross $302.8 million) once again showed up-and-comers who’s boss, out-earning both new release American Reunion and new(/old) release Titanic 3-D by a substantial margin.
Still, those two movies didn’t do too shabbily themselves, their $21.4 million and $17.3 million weekend grosses grabbing them spots two and three, respectively. Meanwhile, Wrath of the Titans‘ $15 million weekend gross (total gross $58.8 million) was enough to land it in spot number four, while Mirror Mirror, which just debuted last week, squeaked into the top five with a weekend gross of $11 million (total gross $36.4 million).
Out in limited release were Damsels in Distress ($64,199), We Have a Pope ($30,400), Surviving Progress ($4,442) and Keyhole ($3,200).
After years of waiting, fans of Joss Whedon and horror-comedy will finally get a chance to see director Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods when the long-delayed film hits theaters nationwide next weekend, along with fellow wide releases Lockout and The Three Stooges. Limited releases will include Bad Ass, Blue Like Jazz, Detention, Hit So Hard, Late Bloomers, L!fe Happens, Here, Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day and Monsieur Lazhar. MM
