It’s been a while since we’ve had a crazy-stalker-roommate movie, huh? New release The Roommate, starring Minka Kelly as a college student who has to put up with a crazy-stalker-roommate played by Leighton Meester, grabbed the top spot at the box office last weekend (weekend gross $15.6 million), so we probably won’t need another crazy-stalker-roommate movie for a while. The James Cameron-produced Sanctum came in second, earning $9.2 million in its first weekend (don’t worry, Mr. Cameron, you’ll be back to pulling in weekend grosses with more digits in them when the Avatar sequels come out). Rounding out the top five were No Strings Attached (weekend gross $8.4 million, total gross $51.7 million), The King’s Speech ($8.3 million weekend gross, $84.1 million total gross) and The Green Hornet ($6.1 million weekend gross, $87.2 million total gross).
Newly out in limited release this past weekend were Cold Weather ($15,500), Waiting for Forever ($10,194) and The Other Woman ($5,900).
Next weekend sees the release of a Justin Bieber movie (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never), a generic-looking romantic comedy (Just Go With It) and yet another Shakespeare adaptation (Gnomeo and Juliet features garden gnomes and the vocal talents of Michael Caine and Dolly Parton, both of which sets it apart from last December’s The Tempest). Also to be released this weekend is The Eagle, directed by Kevin Macdonald. Carancho, Cedar Rapids, MOOZ-lum, Vidal Sassoon: The Movie and Poetry (the new film from Secret Sunshine director Chang-dong Lee) are all scheduled for limited release.
