Think like a director.
No matter what position you have on a film crew, try to always think like the director, then you’ll know the best way for you to help.
Get to know your production designer.
If you’re shooting a film as a DP, work immediately on your relationship with the production designer during pre-production. If you don’t click, you’ll have problems later when you’re shooting.
“Thank you” can’t be understated.
Let fellow crew members know how much you appreciate the job they’re doing. A friendly smile and a “thank you” go a long way.
It can be you.
If everybody is telling you, “It’s a closed business and very, very difficult to get into,” keep telling yourself, ‘Someone has to get in… Why shouldn’t it be me?’ Keep saying that.
Take your blinders off.
When you’re on the low end of the pole on a crew, take your blinders off. Watch how the people ‘above’ you handle themselves. If they get into trouble with the DP or the actors or the director or other crew members, make a note of why, and then don’t do that when you’re in their position. You’ll go far, trust me.
